Alghero (Catalan: L'Alguer, Sardinian: S'Alighera) is a city in the northwest of the island of Sardinia, Italy, in the province of Sassari. The city has a population of over 40,000.

In Alghero, the old Catalan dialect called Alguerese has traditionally been spoken. It was brought to the area by Catalan conquerors after they expelled the original Sardinian-speaking population at the end of the 14th century. The official language of the city became Spanish in the 17th century and later Italian. Even today, a large part of Alghero's population understands Alghero Catalan.

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria is the cathedral of Alghero, originally built in the Gothic style.
San Francesco is a church built in the 14th century, the dome of which has become a symbol of Alghero.
Palazzo d'Albis is a palace built in the 16th century, famous for the visit of Charles V in October 1541. According to the account, Charles spoke to the townspeople from the balcony of the palace as follows: Bonita, por mi fé, y bien assentada (Beautiful, by my faith, and well-built) and Estade todos caballeros (You are all gentlemen).
Porta a Terra, a city gate built in the 14th century. The gate was formerly known as Torre degli Ebrei (Tower of the Jews), as the Jewish community assisted King Peter III of Catalonia in the conquest of Alghero.
