The Colosseum is an ancient Roman amphitheatre in Rome, Italy. The Colosseum was the largest amphitheatre in the entire Roman Empire and apparently had a capacity of more than 50,000 spectators.
The construction of the Colosseum was started by Emperor Vespasian in the early 70s and it was inaugurated in 80 during the reign of Titus. During its first centuries, the Colosseum hosted gladiatorial fights, hunting and other shows, as well as executions.
Today, the Colosseum is partly in ruins due to earthquakes and rock looting. It is one of Rome's most popular attractions and a holy place for the Catholic Church.
