Italian Delights:
The best blood oranges are said to grow in Sicily, in the volcanic soil of Mount Etna, high above sea level.
The color of blood oranges often changes only after the harvest has begun.
In midwinter, the daily temperature variations, that is, warm days and cool nights, promote the development of orange and red hues.
It is unclear why the oranges on the same tree or in different years do not change color as intensely.
All the fruits, however, have the same delicious, distinctive sweet-tart blood orange flavor.
